Our Technology

Our quantum computers are based on microfabricated ion trap chips. These chips, built using our custom multi-layer process, have patterned metal structures which serve to confine individual atomic ions tens of microns above the surface. Optical components can be integrated into the dielectrics that separate the metal layers to deliver and collect the light required to control and measure the ions.  We are developing the chip technology and the processes required to interface our chips with the outside world.

Role and Responsibilities

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Lab Technician to boost our current technical support staff to help support the current growth of the company and its planned future expansion.  In this varied engineering role, you will be working alongside existing technical staff on state-of-the-art quantum computing systems, helping to supporting teams of engineers and scientists with installations, upgrades, and research projects.

On a daily basis, you could be breaking down vacuum systems and working with our key Ion trapping technology, building new systems, giving input into designs, or assisting scientists with commissioning or research tasks.  Along with the technical aspects of the role, the Technician will be working alongside our Opto-Mechanical Technician or taking a lead on stock control, purchasing and supplier management, producing technical documentation and ensuring that lab and workshop spaces are tidy and safe, alongside the many other routine tasks that are required in a well-run lab environment.

This role may suit an experienced individual who can hit the ground running.  We offer the chance to work with experienced Ion-Trapping experimentalists and engineers who are keen to share their knowledge and skills.

You have a range of practical technical skills

Ideally, candidates will quickly take responsibility for tasks with minimal supervision, and should have a good range of experience and technical skills in several of the following areas:

  • High-end mechanical assembly, vacuum assembly, electrical assembly or hand soldering;
  • Working from mechanical and electrical drawings;
  • Machining and parts inspection;
  • Electronics, surface mount componentry and PCBs;
  • Lasers, optics and fibre-optics; or
  • Cryogenics and pressurised gases.

You might also have additional qualifications, experience, or skills such as:

  • Experience in a scientific support role or a commercial research environment; or
  • Experience of establishing new facilities;
  • Good computer and IT skills;
  • An advanced modern apprenticeship (Level 3) in Engineering or equivalent industrial experience, ideally with a vocational qualification in Engineering;
  • HNC (Level 4) or higher qualification in Engineering.
